About Studio Nilima
Studio Nilima is an action-based research collective based in Guwahati, Assam, India. Inspired by the life of Nilima Dutta, we bring together lawyers, thinkers, academics, artists, and students to engage with contemporary concerns of Northeast India, specifically Assam.
They initiate dialogues and community engagement and explore new ways of learning, thinking, research and practice. We exist at the intersections; the intersections of law, governance, and society.
About the Initiative
Pratidhwani (the Echo) is a core initiative at Studio Nilima, which engages with the correctional homes of Assam. Since 2017, Studio Nilima has been at the forefront in bridging the gap in access to justice for the marginalized and vulnerable inmates by making routine visits to the correctional homes of Assam.
Through these visits, we have made an attempt at understanding and improving prison conditions through dialogues with stakeholders who form the prison ecosystem and support rehabilitation efforts of inmates into society.
A major part of our intervention in the correctional homes has been through providing effective legal representation to the inmates and also pursuing strategic litigations to address the structural deficiencies within the correctional home apparatus.
